Project 2 / Sense of Place

Observe your surroundings – people, vehicles, buildings, plants, signages, nature, activities. Record these in sketches, photography and/or video recording. Study all the visuals that you had collected.

Select visuals that you find relevant and interesting to you, which you can translate into a design work that reflects your interpretation of a place. Remember to apply design principles in your work. For materials, you may use any of your choice, but do consider their suitability to best express your idea.

1.0 VISUAL RESEARCH

As usual I went on Pinterest to get visual references for the assignment. Sometimes a single photograph can't express that much meaning on visual, so my idea is to make a contrast with a photograph and some drawings/ other photographs. I decided to make something like figure1.2, based with a black and white photo and add some colourful elements the middle part of it.

I took figure2.1-3 photos during Week 9 tutorial class as a in class exercise. Later I presented my brief idea about a combination of drawing and photography to my lecturer. My idea was approved so I got to start to complete the idea. 

As the photos were taken in my room, I decided to make the theme of my artwork as comfort place. I chose figure 2.1 as the photo I will be working on.

First, I made the photograph to black and white by adjusting the saturation of the photo, and it is the main photo that I will be working on. Later, I traced out the part that I wanted to replace to colourful part.

My desk is where I stay most of the time and where I let my creativity run wild. Therefore, I added some of the imaginary elements in contrast with the realistic world (which is the photography).

I filled the traced gap with different colourful elements and also fixed the traced shape a little and this is my final work.

Feedback Week9: Photography approved, idea of comfort place approved.

Feedback Week10: Idea of making contrast of drawings and photography approved, suggested to start with black and white photo, in contrast with colourful elements.

5.0 REFLECTION

It was actually hard to think of the matching colours, because I was trying to follow the harmony design principle which I have to make the whole artboard in a similar and peaceful colour tone. It was fun playing around to think of what element should I put in at the same time balance the colors.
